The latest generation of digital equipment ensures images of the highest quality with minimal exposure to radiation.
The images are acquired directly on the computer, guaranteeing quality and speed; moreover, it is possible to process and optimize the image on the computer, often avoiding the need to repeat the exam if the result is not satisfactory.
It is worth noting that an intraoral radiograph or an orthopantomograph with the current equipment exposes the patient to a lower amount of radiation than they would receive after a walk in the sunlight.
Intraoral radiographs
Orthopantomography is not always sufficient to reach a definitive diagnosis: for this reason, it is often useful to perform an intraoral radiography, a small x-ray that allows the visualization of at most three or four teeth.
The intraoral radiograph is useful in various situations, for example:
- if a root canal treatment is needed, to know the number and shape of the roots and to accurately measure the length of the canals;
- when starting periodontal therapy, to assess the amount of bone that has been lost and the shape of the intraosseous pockets;
- to check for carious lesions that are difficult to see clinically;
- to monitor the procedures performed.
Implant planning using software
Digital equipment is also useful in implantology: thanks to the use of dedicated software, it is possible to receive digital images of the anatomical area concerned where the implants are virtually applied, calculating their length and diameter, so that the surgical procedure can be performed later with greater safety and predictability.
The information can then be transferred to another machine that quickly produces templates useful for guiding the surgery. It is also possible to perform a virtual endoscopy, a highly valuable diagnostic tool to check, for example, the internal state of a maxillary sinus or the mandibular canal.
Intraoral photography
Intraoral photography is essential for complete treatment documentation. Thanks to the transition from analog to digital, new procedures and imaging techniques help the dentist complete the diagnosis and document the progress and final result of the therapy, as well as being an aid in communication with the patient.
Software for patient motivation
These are software programs that help communication between doctor and patient, utilizing the effectiveness of demonstrative videos and images that clearly and simply explain the planned and proposed procedures, making the patient aware of all aspects of the treatment they will undergo, involving them and guiding them with greater awareness towards the most appropriate choice, to be able to express an even more precise and informed consent.
