Pregnancy is really an “interesting state”, but there are some behaviours that need to be adopted even in this happy and important moment in the life of a woman.
First, and always, a correct prevention is important: a good rule of thumb when planning a pregnancy consists in having a healthy mouth when pregnant, eliminating any periodontal disease and caries.
Eliminate any possibility of incurring an acute or chronic disease during the gestation period in order to protect the mother from the risk of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory substances that are not always advisable and appropriate. It is now known that, if necessary, dental treatments can be carried out during pregnancy, especially in the first quarter, using the most delicate treatment during the formation of the fetus, and with particular attention to the administration of local anesthetics, as well as the prescription of medications that are essential for the treatment of infections, which of course must not cross the ematoplacentar barrier. One of the most common inconveniences that a woman can have during the pregnancy period is the more or less marked bleeding of the gums, due to the action of gestational hormones; also the saliva of a pregnant women is particularly dense. Therefore, the pregnant women should take more care of her dental hygiene, continue to brush her teeth even if the gums are bleeding, go to the dentist at least once every three months to perform oral hygiene sessions or verify the presence of carious processes.
