CONSCIOUS SEDATION

CONSCIOUS SEDATION

The Conscious Sedation is an innovative anaesthetic technique that represents a real revolution in the field of oral surgery, although already very well known and used in medicine for other needs such as endoscopy or minor interventions.
The main objective is to attenuate the emotional responses of the patient, such as anxiety and panic attacks, which can occur during an intervention or in the early stages that precede it, providing the patient with a state of relaxation (intermediate state between wakefulness and sleep), amnesia and pain control, and minor post-operative effects. Conscious sedation does not result in the loss of protective reflexes such as the ability to autonomously maintain the patency of the airways (breathing apparatus); it also allows the patient to appropriately respond to physical stimulation and to voice commands (the patient is conscious and cooperative).
Sometimes some patients choose sedation for a lower perception of what is happening, others because maybe they are very sensitive in the mouth and with a heightened gag reflex so that even simple procedures (such as fillings) could be an insurmountable problem.
Depending on the clinical case and the intervention type, the need for conscious sedation is evaluated together with a professional Anaesthetist, responsible for the procedure, which shall assess the if the patient is suitable through specific clinical information and instrumental investigations.
Methodology: consists of administering to the patient intravenously small doses of drugs including sedatives (benzodiazepines) and narcotic analgesics. The patient is monitored continuously during all the phases, guaranteeing a high level of safety.
